Support Types

There are currently 5 types of support systems in the mattress industry; Traditional innerspring, Individually Wrapped Coils, All Foam, Air Mattress, and Water Beds. There are positives and negatives with each one and some are better than other for you specific situation. Traditional Innersprings

Traditional Innerspring is a coils system where the coils are all connected to each other. This coils system is the oldest version of spring mattresses but still very popular. There are many different types and names for this support system but they all have one thing in common the coils are connected to each other in one way or another. Some popular brands with this type of mattress are Serta, Simmons, Sealy, Symbol Mattress, Englander Mattress, Corsicana, Kingsdown, Spring Air, and King Coil.

Individually Pocketed Coils (Individually Wrapped Coils)

The Individually Wrapped coils are the second version of the coils systems, but unlike the traditional coil system, this support system is not connected to each other. Instead the coils are wrapped in fabric or pocketed. There are many types and versions of this support system but still have one thing in common they are all individually wrapped in fabric. All Foam mattresses are the newest technology in the mattress industry. These mattress types became popular in 1991 with the release of the first memory foam mattress. Air support Core or Bladders (Air Mattresses)

Air Mattresses are mattresses that have an air support core or bladders. These mattress use air to give you support. With most air based support mattresses you can adjust the firmness’s by adding or taking away air. There are many different types of these systems. From ones that only use a single air bladder to where both you and your partner have to agree on the same firmness or ones with multiple air bladders where you can adjust the firmness of you upper body, lumbar, and lower body to the perfect firmness for yourself. Water Beds

Water beds are a lot like air mattresses except instead of putting air into your mattress you use water they can also come with single bladders, Free Flow, or multiply bladders. Water beds are not as common anymore because of the invention of memory foam. Memory Foam has a lot for the same benefits as a water mattress without all the negative features. There really is not a leading brand for water beds anymore.
