Mattress Sizes and Dimensions
When it comes to mattresses, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. There are several factors you should keep in mind prior to selecting the right mattress size for you.
Some factors include: the mattress being longer than the tallest person sleeping on it, the bed width allowing enough space to fold your arms behind your head, without going beyond the mattress edge or touching your partner’s elbows, the size of the room in which the mattress is placed, and personal preference for how much room you'd like to have while sleeping. A list of mattresses and their dimensions can be found below:
Twin Mattress Dimensions - 39" X 75"
Twin size mattresses are 39 inches in width and 75 inches in length. Otherwise known as "single" mattresses, twin mattresses can accommodate one child or one adult sleeper, although the length could be too short for taller adults. Twin size mattresses are used for children's rooms, bunk beds, daybeds and smaller spaces such as guest bedrooms.
Twin XL Mattress Dimensions - 39" X 80"
Twin XL mattresses are 39 inches in width and 80 inches in length. They are great space savers and are commonly found in dorm rooms and guest bedrooms. With an added five inches of length to your sleeping space, Twin XL mattresses may be a better choice for taller people wanting a twin-size option. Twin XL are also used for Split Kings. A Split King is two Twin XL next to each other and is most commonly used with adjustable bases when two people want to be able to sleep however they want. Full Mattress Dimensions - 54" X 75"
Full or double mattresses, at 54 inches in width and 75 inches in length, provide much more width for your sleeping area vs. a twin-size. A full size mattress is ideal for one person, as dividing the mattress in half for two people would only leave 27 inches of sleeping space each or the equivalent of a crib mattress.
Queen Mattress Dimensions - 60" X 80"
Queen size mattresses, at 60 inches in width and 80 inches in length, might be ideal for those wanting ample sleeping space while preserving living space in their room. A queen size can be great for growing children and taller adults or couples that prefer sleeping closer together. Queen mattresses are the most popular mattress size today.
King Mattress Dimensions - 76" X 80"
King size mattresses, at 76 inches in width and 80 inches in length, are generally the best choice for couples. You each have a sleeping service equivalent to a twin extra long mattress. It is also great for growing families or pet owners who may have their pets sharing the space.
California King Mattress Dimensions - 72" X 84"
California king size mattresses, at 72 inches in width and 84 inches in length, are great for those looking for maximal sleeping length. Four inches of width are taken from a traditional king mattress and added to the length. This often makes the California king size the ideal choice for adjustable beds, as length is maintained even with the head and/or foot elevated.
